Wish List: The Hunt

This year has been a big one for me on the hunting and fishing front.  I’ve been lucky enough to spend quite a bit of time in the woods and at the lake, and have more time scheduled between now and the end of the year.  I can’t wait.  I’m the type of guy that immerses himself, and I’ve really enjoyed (re)learning the ins and outs of hunting and fishing, the gear, what works for me, and seeing all the stuff that you *need* to chase birds.

Can you go over the top?  Sure.  This is easy in every hobby, including hunting, and over the last year I think I’ve curated a pretty good wish list.  I’m not saying I plan on owning all of this, but if the right opportunity presented itself, it would be hard to say no.

From top left:

1. Holland & Holland Waxed Cap:  A waxed hat is a must.  Nothing wrong with a Holland & Holland hat, as one of my goals is to one day own one of their shotguns (after I win the Powerball).
2. Low Country Coat from Redfish Brand:  Sure, Barbours are great, and there are plenty of secondary options (Filson, Browning, Columbia, etc.).  Redfish Brand has recreated their classic field coat and it works not only in the field, but at the office as well.  Top of the line.
3. Ghurka Marksman #266 Chestnut Leather Gun Case:  This case is extremely nice.  It makes me wonder if it’s OK to have a case that costs more than the gun…
4. Randall Made 8-4 Trout & Bird Knife:  I really like the idea of carrying a good knife when hunting.  Maybe it’s the Boy Scout in me.
5. BraeVal Artemis Shirt:  Wool is a breathable natural fiber…that and all the bells and whistles make this shirt a must for any hunter’s closet.  It’s like a swiss army knife that’s built to be beat the death.
6. Randolph Engineering Sportman Sunglasses:  Gold rimmed is cool, but black rimmed is the power play.  Made in the USA and polarized lenses keep you focused.
7. Pinnell Custom Leather Shell Pouch:  I’m drawn to this pouch because of all the hidden compartments.  Not that I have anything to hide, but I like the ability.  Oh, that and the embossed monogram.
8. Habsburg Ralf Gillet:  A vest has come in handy for me out in the field, but I want something lighter.  This gillet from Habsburg is such a cool look.  The olive and kelly green is a killer combo.
9. Onward Reserve Rattlesnake Belt:  Being that I’m all about unique belts (especially exotics) this one would take some serious stones to wear.  This belt sends a message: not only do you shoot birds, but anything that poses a threat.  Top of the food chain.
10. Wesley Richards & Co. Premium Shooting Gloves:  The leather details on these gloves are outstanding.  The type of gloves that you hate to lose, unless it includes a great story.
11. Russell Moccasin 10 oz. Bullhide Leather Snake Boots:  Top shelf boots hand made in Wisconsin.  These are a lifelong purchase that won’t let you down on any hunt, regardless of how bad you shoot.
12. Ball and Buck Field Pants:  A great pair of field pants that should last forever.  Ball and Buck doesn’t miss any of the details…check out the shotgun shell-esque rivets.
13. Wild Turkey Decades Bourbon:  Because you’ll need something to drink AFTER the hunt.
14. Antique Campaign Chairs:  …and you’ll need somewhere to sit to enjoy that fine bourbon.

What sort of hunting gear has your attention?

If you’re looking for a more affordable, yet classy, leather gun case then take a look at the ones at Kevin’s in Thomasville.

Kevins has the legit rattlesnake belts too…  Sourced from the taxidermist around the corner from the Thomasville shop.

Love the chairs, been looking for something similar for whiskey, cigars, etc – but not for 7500 like those. Any other options?

The Filson Chelan chair.  Or do like I did and build your own.

Gotta kill your own rattler to make a belt. There must a killin story behind it or you’ll be belittled by the old timers. And anyone from south GA for that matter.

This is the most unrealistic hunting gear guide I have ever seen. Do you even hunt? Or do you just show up to a game farm and kick up pen raised quail before sitting around in an expensive fold up chair? If you showed up with all this crap to a real hunt you would be laughed off the field.

What does that have to do with hunting?  What should hunters own as a daily driver?

I completely agree that if someone showed up with all of this, they should laughed off the field.  However, if you were presented an opportunity to get any of this at a good deal, would you say ‘no’ on principle?
