Top of the Heap: Cooper from ‘Social Primer’

Who doesn’t know Cooper?  He’s been a good friend to me over the past couple of years, and I was grateful when he agreed to submit to Top of the Heap.  Social Primer is a great blog for gentlemen, as well as for ladies looking for a gentleman.  The Social Primer twitter feed is outstanding – as it’s main purpose is to see consistent tweets and photos of the Charleston scene.  Very ‘upper crust’.  Cooper is a Southern Gentleman, and prescribes to the ‘sans socks’ mentality, as his Top of the Heap feature shows:

I’m having a new love affair with an old flame. Many know me for the uniform I wear (and the uniform I photograph and write about) and that usually includes my beloved Gucci loafers. But a couple of months ago I ran across a brand new pair of Bass Weejuns at one of my favorite thrift stores. I was amused to see them. What old memories came rushing back. At $2.99, it wasn’t very hard to indulge the nostalgia, so I bought them and brought them home. I started wearing them around town when I needed a blazer and a khaki. And then something strange happened. They broke in and to my surprise, they are damned comfortable. So I started wearing them with shorts, with or without a blazer, uptown, downtown and all around town. Now, I can’t live without them.

As we prepare for my New York Fashion Week presentation of my new solo collection, I’ve decided to have the models wearing Weejuns exclusively. I feel so strong about this American classic and am ready to share the word. Weejuns! Simply awesome. – K. Cooper Ray, 2012

Are those black or brown weejuns? I can’t tell the difference. Cooper is a class act.

Thanks, Jay. Always an honor to be on RCS, even with my skinny, pale freckled ankles blazing for all the world to see. Oh well, been way to busy to do my usual summering on sail boats. And thanks, Sam. Those are the Cordovan/burgundy color.
    Cordially,
    Cooper

Cooper, I have a pair of these (exactly the same, burgundy and all) that I have been wearing exclusively during warmer weather for years now and there is absolutely nothing better than a great pair of burgundy Weeejuns. They go with everything, get a good bit of attention when they are freshly polished and wear like iron. If you are going to wear a loafer nothing beats a Weejun.

Are these New Old stock, or brand new. I bought decent shoes from Bass as recently as 2009, but nothing I’ve seen from them since has been worth a bucket of warm spit. Thus, I’ve been afraid to pick up a pair of weejuns.

I have no idea what the stock is, but I guess I’ll find out soon enough. Bass is providing Weejuns for the NYFW presentation. I expect to be a Weejun aficianado very soon.
