Roundup: Vintage Ralph Lauren Advertising

What is there to be said about the Ralph Lauren ‘lifestyle’?  They have NAILED it in their print and media advertising for as long as I can remember.  The images evoke a feeling.  I’ll call it ‘American Elegance’.

We are going to get into the Ralph Lauren Conundrum later (like we did with J. Crew), but for now, enjoy some of Ralph Lauren’s best:

Make sure to include in your “conundrum” write-up: Why on earth did they get rid of the Regent and Preston Corneliani line of trousers? all of their dress trousers are SUPER slim now. No more traditional cut.

What went wrong? Two words: Factory Stores.

Although their golf shop stuff is the best alongside Peter Millar.

If I want to spend 200 on a dress shirt I’d much sooner go get one made a Miller Brothers than sport the Pony on my chest.

The 70s/80s catalogs were the best. In the 90s, especially late 90s, I felt like their images were getting too “modely.”

Also, what is the climate of a place where one person is wearing a cotton rain coat on top of a suit and the other is wearing a madras sport coat?
