Reader Feedback: The Yellow Oxford

Over time, my wardrobe changes.  My style is still the same, but I’ll go through sweater phases, then back to sport coats, or a boot phase, then back to a double-monk phase.  My ‘middle 80%’ is consistent.  Good jeans, good khakis, good shoes, and a lot of OCBDs.  I have a lot of each, especially oxford cloth shirts – in almost every color and style.  The blue OCBD is my go-to.

One piece that was a noticeably absent was a yellow oxford.  I absolutely LOVE oxford cloth shirts.  Brooks Brothers makes a great one, and I’m sure you can get Read Wall or Gitman to make one for you.  I love the way they fit, and especially the way they wear.  NEVER wear a non-iron oxford cloth shirt, as it kills all the charm.  Must-irons hold an ironing well, and if taken care of, will last for years (and years).  This post isn’t an ode to true oxford cloth, but you get my point.

The point of this post is to talk about the yellow oxford.  I would argue that it has a place in the rotation.  I really like the look with jeans or khakis, on it’s own or under a navy sport coat…I think it’s a cool look that is as versatile as a pink oxford.

What do you think?  When would you wear it?   What would you pair it with?

Always loved the look with a blazer and jeans- just can’t find them anymore. Tough to find the heavy cotton – need to iron versionReplyCancel

Gant do a nice plain one as well. Brooks Brothers are king though….ReplyCancel

Have you seen the Mercer & Son option?  I may try one of those…ReplyCancel

The yellow OCBD is just as important as the pink and blue/white uni stripe. If you don’t mind logos and have a tailor to slim them up eBay is chock full of the classic fit Polo versions. The yellow ocbd goes with standups and loafers in summer and khakis and 1155s in cooler temps.ReplyCancel

I have a great one from Mercer & Sons but it’s definitely a paler yellow than the one you posted which I really like. I agree that it looks great with a navy blazer.ReplyCancel

I like the concept, but I feel like Brooks’ shade of yellow is just terrible. It’s a weird color that I think does not look good with a lot of skin tones. I found a J Press yellow OCBD at the thrift store one time that was the perfect shade of yellow and I wore the hell out of it.ReplyCancel

Yeah, J.Press doesn’t offer a yellow (at least it’s not on their website).  Check out Mercer & Son…it’s a really nice shade of yellow.ReplyCancel

I have a yellow Oxford (LL Bean), and I get lots of compliments for it. I think it looks great in any season as well! ReplyCancel

Hard pass. If I want to look like a Techie I’ll just sleep in a library for a month or so. ReplyCancel

Yellow can be tricky. It looks good with the right skin tone. But, if you’re fair-skinned with light hair like me, then it looks plain awful. Your face gets washed out completely and you end up looking ill.  ReplyCancel

I have a Polo RL OCBD from the mid-90’s that is a yellow and white university stripe.  The yellow is light yellow and the result is a great shade and I get complements all the time for it.ReplyCancel

If you want to look like you have a case of jaundice, then by all means, go for it.  A very pale yellow is the only way to go, if you go at all.ReplyCancel

It has to be pale yellow if you ask me and then it works well with jeans, faded navy shorts, and green shorts/flat front chinos (ode to The Masters).ReplyCancel

Yellow oxford paired with a crochet flat end tie in navy, some dark khaki pleated dockers, and rubber sole Rockports…you have your standard middle school math teacher starter kit.ReplyCancel

I wear yellow and pink OCBDs primarily in the summer/spring. Love them. Great contrast for an otherwise normal work look for me.ReplyCancel
