RCS Collection: The Tour Visor

The Tour Visor – a.k.a ‘high profile’, ‘old school’, ‘the windshield’, or the ‘crown visor’.  I’ve worn these for years – on the course and off.  Luckily I was blessed with a large head, so these don’t make it look like I’m wearing a hang glider.  I don’t like the low-profile visors, as they look like a headband with a brim.  My first visor was an original black one from the Masters – that was back in the mid-90’s, and I wore it out.  There have been others since, but here is my collection (this is actually about half of my collection – I have some beaters that I use for yard work and fishing, and some that should be retired).  I have a reputation in my circle as a guy who wears these visors, so I’ve been given a few nice ones from all over the place.

Most of these visors that are produced today are made by American Needle, Ahead, and Imperial.  The originals were produced by Texace – if you happen to find one of these, don’t pass it up – they are like gold.  The visors are easy to care for: after they have been sweat through our worn ‘well’, spray with Zout, wash in cold water on gentle cycle/low spin, remove, and re-shape.  Hang it on a doorknob to dry.  It wont’ be as stiff, which gives it a little more character.

(Back Row): Arnie’s Umbrella | The Snedeker Bridgestone | Sunset Hills Country Club | Kiawah | Baltusrol
(Middle Row): Reynold’s Plantation | The Green Mothership | Volunteer Traditions | Very old Foot Joy
(Front Row): Bentwater Golf Club | Piedmont Driving Club | Navy Titleist | Very old Sea Island Crest

I’m always in the market for new ones:

(L-R, from top left): Ping Camo | UGA Red/White/Black – Thanks, Coop | Ping White | Bridgestone Green | Ping Camo (again)

Anyone from Ping or Bridgestone is welcome to contact me…

Luckily, these are pretty affordable – usually under $20 – but they are hard to find.  Besides Ebay, here are some good options to add to (or start) your collection:

Sea Island Visor
Kiawah Traditional Visor
Titleist Golf Visor
Bridgestone Golf Visor
Waialae CC Tour Visor

…(and last but not least)
Arnold Palmer Umbrella Visor

    Very nice collection; I could use a couple myself. Did Lawrence talk you into you to wanting those camo ones?

    JRS,
    I’ve got three questions.
    1. The Volunteer Traditions visor looks a little disheveled and flattened in their product shot. Does it come shaped right, or do you have to shape it yourself?
    2. Should I feel bad buying these from a course I haven’t played?
    3. What camera do you use to shoot the pictures? They are really nice and crisp.

    This is a great collection. I have been collecting the high profile visors for about a year now. check out the southern proper golf visor. That was my first high profile visor and it is still one of my favorites. It is difficult to find the high profile styled hats especially since I’ve herd Ping only costume makes them for their sponsored players such as Bubba.
    Great post RCS

    @Trip – haha…but of course.

    @Glenn – I did…not too shabby.

    @Will – here you go: 1. The white VT visors are a higher profile than the navy/tan versions. I have experience with all three, and can attest to their quality. 2. Tough call – I freely admit that I haven’t played Augusta National, but wear the visor. 3. Thanks – it’s a Canon EOS Rebel XSi with a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 lens (details here: https://www.redclaysoul.com/?p=136)

    @Greg – I do like the Southern Proper visors – especially the Kelly Green golf ones…the Navy blue one is nice too.

    I just hope you are not like me and lost like 10 of these things. I have lost 4 on Bourbon Street alone, haha.

    Huge fan of the tour visors and while I didn’t go to UGA, I like how you are now able to start finding college related ones! Strangely, about a year and a half ago, my sister and I teamed up to start doing some more classically inspired tailgate wear and one of out first products was: http://www.ollyoxen.com/Accessories/NCSU/Visors/visors_NCSU.html

    Hopefully one day we can have a little collection going ourselves and can send one your way!

    Great collection! I have found some vintage Texace visors at an Estate sale. One of them looks like a very old green Masters visor with a wool patch of the Masters logo and in great condition. I was wondering what you think that might be worth since you said it is like gold.
