Off-Season Ebay Finds

Seasonality is a smart consumer’s best friend.  Retail space is a premium, and merchandisers ensure that every inch of real estate provides the most return.  A major factor is what is featured in a store or on a website is the season.  This time of year you see a lot of sweaters, jackets, jeans, and boots.  For the outfitters, they are showing off cold weather hunting gear and waders.  Makes sense, a healthy bottom line keeps these places in business.

However, there is another ‘sale section’ that I love.  Ebay is a goldmine if you know what to look for, and more specifically, WHEN to look for it.  I’ve had a lot of luck looking for stuff during it’s off season.  So this time of year, I’m looking for warmer weather gear.  Golf, fishing, hot weather stuff…and there is a lot out there.  Being that I’m a good steward to you readers, here are a few examples:

Footjoy Classics: Are you as tired of skateboard golf shoes as I am?  In the little golf I’ve watched this year, it seems that the Tour is moving away from the uber-casual look as well.  Thank God.  This time of year is the best opportunity to get a pair of the undisputed BEST golf shoes of all time: the Footjoy Classics for ~$100.  I’ve had plenty of pairs of Classics, and absolutely love them.  No other golf shoe comes close.

Scotty Cameron Putters: Sticking with the golf theme, this time of year, there are quite a few options for older Scotty Cameron putters that need a little love.  You’ll find plenty in that $75-$125 range, which are perfect to grab, and send off to a custom shop to have your personalization done (see the one I did here).  It’s a really cool feeling miss 4-footers with your own, bespoke Scotty Cameron.

Fishing Shirts: While we aren’t spending a lot of time on the water these days, there’s no reason not to stock up on a couple good shirts.  I got a few of the Poncho fishing shirts last Spring, and love them, and typically lean on Simms for other button ups.  You can find some short sleeve options for well under $25 this time of year.   Good for on the water or bumming around.

Patagonia Stand Up Shorts: Stand Ups have made a big of a resurgence in the last couple years, proving once again that time is a flat circle.  By no means do I need to sing the Stand Up gospel, but I will p0int out that you can find them $15-20 cheaper than you will when it’s short pants season.

Hard Shell Coolers: This time of year, quite a few folks are dumping their Yeti/Orcas that they got for Christmas.  Clearly not the ideal cooler season, consumers can take advantage.  Be sure to search for ‘pre-owned’ or ‘new without box’ and you’ll find a steep discount over retail.

What do you search for this time of year?

Not quite off season, but in the eBay spirit, I picked up a pair of Alden’s Cape Cod bit loafers, New with box, for ~$100. Absolutely unreal find. eBay is completely worth it if you’re willing to give it time.

Always loved the look of FJ’s but they always gave me blisters in High School.

I’m a big time eBay shopper.  Stand-ups, polo knit and golf shirts, fishing shirts, random camping gear, Quoddy and Rancourt footwear…all saved searches.  Right now I’m focusing on adding new colors in the knit polo short sleeve collection as well as playing seek and find for a white cotton Fred Perry tennis jacket.  Weird, low cost stuff is always the most fun.
