Lust: Glashutte

I came across Glashutte by accident.  I thought it was an IWC, but it seemed a little more substantial.  After doing a little research, I’m really a fan.  Glashutte is a German watch company that has been around for a while.  Don’t kid yourself, Germany produces some serious watches: Lange and NOMOS are both German.

I like the elegance of these watches.  They produce a few models, but I’m really drawn to the Original Senator (above), as well as the Senator Chronometer, and the Senator Observer (examples below).  By no means are these everyday watches, but are outstanding choices for those dressier days.  The price point is in line with what I’d expect to pay for watch of this caliber.  Now all I need is another reason to add to my collection…

There are many, MANY, better options for the money.  I’m eager to see you hone your watch knowledge and taste.

Mildly patronizing comment doesn’t add much to the conversation without reference to even a couple of the “many, MANY, better options for the money.”

Hey NEM – this is why I love talking watches…what do you like as a dressier option?

Would you consider an IWC Mark XII dressy?  How about if it is on a nylon Admiralty Grey instead of an alligator?  Is a Rolex 14060 dressy?  Does a Speedmaster Professional cal.321, the ultimate tool watch, not go with a tuxedo as well as a flight suite?  If not, how come? It’s all subjective.  I consider gold, thin, white dialed pieces to be dressy, and I’m not a real big fan.  However, better options at similar price point would definitely include IWC, Cartier, JLC, and Omega just to name a few.  I appreciate your watch posts not because I have the same horological taste as you, but because you connect to the pieces in your collection in some meaningful way.  I suspect you’ll continue to add to your stash over the years and I hope you’ll swerve into the vintage lanes a time or two.  (Speaking of, didn’t you find an old Omega or something at Scott Antique once? What happened with that?)  That’s the kind of honing I’m talking about.  Knowing enough about a maker to know what’s important or special about the model as well as what it means to the owner.  But I digress…  Finally, just to show I’m not as curmudgeonly and patronizing as I sound at times, I admit my collection, meaningful to me as it is, might be viewed by some as the watch collector’s basics…Rolex, Omega, IWC, Sinn, Bell & Ross, O&W, and some vintage issued military pieces that are just flat out cool as hell to me.  I have an LL Bean field watch, brushed stainless with black military dial, mechanical hacking movement and beat to hell plexi crystal, i received as a gift in 1987, and there isn’t any price that I could take for it.  I wore it to a special event for my daughter in May with my tux.  Hope this adds to the discussion.

I am a fan of your blog. I am also a watch enthusiast as much as I can be. Would love to see a pic of your rotation and know what you hope to add next or in the future as far as your “want” list or “grail” list goes. I have two of my grails(Rolex Hulk & Omega Seamaster 300 master co-ax) but mine are pretty small in price compared to those who want 50-60k watches. Still want a Rolex Pepsi (old or new stainless) and a Panerai 663. **Side note how do you like your Panerai**

HL – let me see what I can do…send me an email and I’ll give you the skinny on my Panerai thoughts.

The company name is technically Glashutte Original. Glashutte is actually a region of Germany known for watch production and there are numerous brands with the region’s name as part of their brand (Muhle Glashutte, Nomos Glashutte, Glashutte Original, etc). As for the brand in question, decent stuff but a lot of their models simply copy A Alnge Sohne models in stainless steel instead of precious metals and at a lower price point. The quality is fine but there are better options for the money.
