In Response: The Under-Appreciated Yellow Oxford (@ Ivy Style)

Ivy Style posted this article on the under-appreciated yellow oxford. The point of the article was how yellow is a distant fourth when compared to white, blue, and pink OCBD options (Ecru who?). I can see how this might be the case – it is tough to find the right tie for a yellow oxford, and I can’t recall that I ever have (or would) wear yellow with a suit.

However – I have always had a yellow oxford. They are one of my favorites. I see them as a ‘dressy’ casual shirt; great to wear tie-less with a navy blazer and khakis. They look better with a BBQ stain rather than a red wine stain. An interesting quote from the piece: “However, in the South […] the margin between pink and yellow is much smaller.” I 100% agree with this, as I wear a yellow oxford as much as I wear pink, probably 1:1.
I have a few other yellows that are staples in the rotation:

Yellow/white University Stripe

Gingham
Some good yellow options:
1. The Mothership – Along with BB’s pink, I think they have the best yellow as well.
2. J. Press – Complete with the flap pocket.
4. Mercer & Sons – Bengal.
5. Rugby & Rugby
Here in Atlanta, we have quite a few yellow options – mainly because of a certain ‘Tech’ school over on North Ave.

I agree. I love both my yellow Polo OCBD and Lands' End tailored fit poplin. Maybe not with a tie, although on second thought, a navy churchill with white dots would look pretty sharp.

Funny you just posted this, I'm literally getting ready to run out the door and get my yellow OCBD tailored. I just discovered your blog today and I commend you on a job well done sir

RL Solid OCBD, wear a blue tie with gold in it and lighter colored khakis and you're good to go.

On occasion, I wear a yellow OCBD with either a tan or an olive poplin suit. Madras tie. The stats given for the yellow shirt might reflect current tastes, but it would be interesting if there were stats for sales from 20-30 years ago. I'm guessing that yellow was more popular then than today.

I usually reserve pink OCBD for when I'm wearing a sports coat or suit, whereas I'll wear my yellow OCBD more casually. I'm not sure why exactly.

DAM – I have that tie…I think you are right. LE Tailored fit are great – I can't find them in 'must' iron, though.

Rondo – Thanks for the kind words.

Duck – It's been too long my friend. I hope all is well in your world. I like the look you suggested – I think the lighter khakis are key.

HTJ – I think so, too.

    EOO – I'm with you.

Nero Wolfe the best dressed detective ever on TV always wore Yellow with a suit. Yellow shirts are classic and very appropriate with the right outfit and tie.

But you do have to be very intentional with them.
