Today is a sad day. Bretagne, the last surviving search and rescue dog that participated in the 9/11 rescue and recovery, crossed the rainbow bridge. She was 16 years old, and lived a full live, not only tirelessly working at the World Trade Center on 9/11, but also during Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Ivan, and many other disasters. She was part of Texas Task Force One, and was with her handler Denise Corliss.
According to Ms. Corliss:
Bretagne (pronounced Brittany) had been experiencing kidney failure and had not eaten for three days. “She was really anxious last night, and she just wanted to be with me,” Ms. Corliss said. “So I laid down with her, right next to her. When she could feel me, she could settle down and go to sleep. I slept with her like that all night.”
She will be laid to rest in the Houston area.

All dogs go to heaven, but she is at the front of the line. Hug your four-legged family members a little tighter tonight, folks.
