UGA vs. Auburn, With A Side of Lewis Grizzard

Plaid Columns | That Dog’ll Bite You! | mixed media on panel | 30 x 30 inches

Yep, tomorrow is one of the oldest rivalries in college football: the Georgia Bulldogs face the Auburn Tigers.  This year’s game is the polar opposite of last year’s game.  This year it’s a top ten match up, and the nationally televised CBS 3:30ET game of the week.  Last year was the equivalent of two AAA high school teams making sure their cleats are on the right feet.

This is a MUST watch game.

UGA vs. Auburn has a nice little connection to Lewis Grizzard and the “That Dog’ll Bite You” quote…here you go:

That Dog’ll Bite You

“Got to tell the dog story. There’s somebody left who hasn’t heard the dog story.

We are playing Auburn. Sanford Stadium. National Television. Winner wins the Southeastern Conference; goes to the Sugar Bowl.

85,000 people jammed into Sanford Stadium. National television audience. This game is on the Armed Service Network. People in Switzerland are seeing this ballgame. Going everywhere.

The band cranks up “Glory, Glory to Ole Georgia” and our team comes running out. 85,000 stand as one.

We are led by our gallant mascot, UGA-U-G-A. What a dog! What a gorgeous dog. What a symbol of ferocity. But UGA ain’t real smart. UGA did not realize he was at a football game. Nor did he realize he was on national television, and was going into living rooms the width and breadth of this great nation.

And there, in front of all them people, he began to lick himself where dogs occasionally want to lick themselves, ok?

We don’t have to get any more graphic than that.

Bubba an’ Earl sittin’ on the fifty.

Bubba sees the dog, punches earl and said, ‘Earl, look at that dog. Dadgum, I wish I could do that.’

Earl said, ‘ Bubba, that dog’ll bite you!’”

And to complete the “been there, done that, and got the t-shirt”, here you go:

What’s your prediction?

In some previous post you mentioned an Auburn hat from The Game that you wore throughout college.  Did you go to Auburn?  GO DAWGS!!ReplyCancel

No, I didn’t go to Auburn.  I prescribed to the “it’s just a cool hat” theory, as did most of my UGA/Auburn buddies.  They all wore hats from other schools except on gameday.  Go Dawgs!ReplyCancel

I graduated from UGA in ’90 after four glorious years in Athens (and I tacked on 2 extra for graduate school).  Not once before, during, or after that time have I been interested, curious, or even dared to wear another team’s hat.  Especially an Auburn one.  I don’t believe any bona fide Dawg would either.  But that’s just me.  GATA!!ReplyCancel

Being the Mrs. is a War Eagle I’ve watched my fair share of Auburn this year. If the offense can get rolling – like the TAMU game or first 20 mins of the LSU game – wouldn’t be surprised to see them win by two scores. If they can’t move the ball like the Clemson game or last 40 mins of the LSU it’ll be a long day for Aubs. I feel like the latter is more likelyReplyCancel

Nice start to my Friday! This team is making me believe and overcome my inner Munson. Defensive struggle, Hot Rod has a huge day…23-20 Dawgs! ReplyCancel
