Recent Acquisitions

We’ve done quite a few gift guides and round ups recently, but as any reader of this blog knows, I love the hunt.  I frequent Goodwills and secondhand stores, and enjoy searching Ebay for treasures.  Rather than focus on all the new stuff, here are some recent acquisitions I’ve scored and (mostly) discounted prices:

I love madras, and I love popovers.  I came across this jewel at a really random Goodwill last week, and immediately pulled the trigger.  There isn’t much better in the summer than vintage Indian madras.  We just booked a house on Harbour Island in June, so this bad boy will get some serious play down in the Bahamas.

I regularly search for Aldens on Ebay.  Every once in a while I’ll find my size/last combo, and then every once in a while, the price is right.  These tan Brooks Brothers X Alden tassel loafers popped up, in my size, and for a GREAT price ($39).  What’s even better, it turns out I knew the seller.  These are in great condition.  I’ll give them a serious polishing and we are they are ready to go.  They probably have a year or so left in the soles, and then off to Alden for a resoling and reconstruction.

Another Ebay find, these Levi’s 501 garment dyed jeans in ‘Evergreen’ were a steal at $16.  They were in perfect condition, and after a wash and a hang-dry, they are ready to go.  I actually wear the garment dyed 501s all the time.  I have a few pairs (blue, light green, tan, stone, burgundy, and moss).  I love the look and the fact that they don’t need to be ironed is great.

I have a big tie collection, but I’m going to dump about 80% of them.  I am extremely picky with my ties, and when I find one I like, I buy it.  I came across this vintage silk tie at Goodwill last week, and bought it immediately.  It’s from an old Men’s store (Muse’s), and cost a cool $2:

Keeping with the same theme, I added these two ties from Miller Brothers.  They are extremely heavy woven silk, and look fantastic.  I like them because I can wear them with just about anything: charcoal suit, navy coat, blue shirt, white shirt, U-stripe…and they are timeless.

The detail: Both of the ties from Miller Brothers are Robert Keyte:

I’m a HUGE fan of the old Orvis canvas pants.  I see them at Goodwill every once in a while, but they are usually pretty beat up.  I came across these at Goodwill a couple weeks ago, and they are actually in really good shape.  They have been worn, and have just started breaking in.  They are going to need a little tailoring, but I’m looking forward to putting these to good use.

I might remove the leather key fob above the left front pocket, as I don’t have much use for it.  Otherwise, I can see wearing these just about anywhere – work, the park, fishing, or lounging.

I’ll be the first to admit that I have been extremely lucky at Goodwill(s) finding hunting gear.  I came across these Beretta Cordura-faced pants in near perfect condition in my size.  I couldn’t believe it.  These are pretty heavy duty, but I could see a use for these when chasing dogs and birds in a wet field.  Cost: $6.

And I found my belt for July 4th…I love finding these old Leatherman LTD custom belts.  By no means am I into yachting, but I do LOVE America, cubed.

Finally, I got a hat from an outstanding store in Houston.  This waxed cotton Simms hat is going to get quite a bit of wear in the coming months.  Much more to come on Gordy & Sons

I could fill up 2 week’s worth of posts just on my eBay clothing finds.  Denim, casual shirts, Lacoste knit tennis shirts, Rancourt & Co. shoes, Lucchese boots, and all manner of treasures.  Envious of your special Goodwill in ATL!

Anna’s Alterations on Park Road.  Really reasonably priced, quick, and very good.

Quite a haul. Especially jealous of the Alden’s.
