‘Puttin’ on the Grits‘ is an excellent corner of the Internet. The blog is run by Nicole, a UF grad (I know…), and it embodies the ‘classier’ side of the South. She documents her travels, her recipes, decorating, and college football. I was so glad that Nicole agreed to submit for the series – I think you’ll all like what you see:
For as long as I can remember, holidays and Sunday dinners have revolved around my gramma’s kitchen table. You could show up at her house unannounced, anytime of the day, and she would have something amazing cooking just waiting to serve you. She is the epitome of southern hospitality. A few years ago she wasn’t able to spend Christmas with us so she left a package for me under the tree with a card attached.
Her card read:
“Dear Nicole,
I wanted you to know a little history behind your Christmas gift. It is a real treasure because my grandmother gave it to my mother and she in return gave it to me- so it’s pretty old and well seasoned. Four generations old- from your great, great grandmother “Bessie Elizabeth Agee” from Virginia. I cannot think of anyone who would deserve it more than you. Pass it on to your children someday. I’m expecting you to cook me something! Love you dearly, Gramma”
This cast iron skillet rarely leaves my stove. It makes the best bacon, perfect cornbread, and although some may cringe I even make my favorite banana pecan rum cake in it. My gramma has taught me everything I know about cooking- I hope I am doing her cast iron skillet justice. – Nicole, 2012
