Real Men Carry a Nice Dopp

In all my travels, I’ve learned that it’s nice to carry a good dopp kit.  I have an older model Ralph Lauren that is on it’s last legs.  It is canvas, and I think I’ll go the same route next time as they are easier to clean.  They make anything you need ‘travel size’ now, […]

There’s always the personalized Dopp kit you get as a groomsman’s gift. Best groomsnan’s gift I’ve gotten.

Robb - December 30, 2011 - 10:28 AM

Brooks Brothers has great ones!

LL Bean’s is tough to beat

East of Oxford - December 30, 2011 - 11:47 AM

Filson, Orvis and LL. Bean Signature all have some pretty attractive options. JRS, have a good new year bud.

Chitlin's con Carne - December 30, 2011 - 12:08 PM

Good choices, all of them. Many a Texan has the monogrammed El Kineno from the King Ranch. Good kit and lasts forever, like their billfolds. Keep up the good work, JRS.

I have a pretty old one from LL Bean I got from my father. It’s a dark forest green.

Brandon - December 30, 2011 - 4:12 PM

That Stonewall olive color from Southern Marsh is beautiful…and for $49 seems to be a pretty good deal as long as it would hold up. I would love to get a new dopp kit sometime, but I still have one from Fossil that I bought about 4 years ago or so that is holding up wonderfully.

DMG - December 30, 2011 - 4:35 PM

Picked up a new dopp kit this year from Blue Claw Co. A little disappointed that it only came in black, but the leather ends are a great accent. Size is great too, as it fits the essentials, but isn’t oversized.

Great assortment of DOPP Kit choices and timely as I’m in the market for one. I wouldn’t presume to dictate content for RCS, but I think a great follow-up posting to this would be the choice of men’s items that RCS recos for DOPP kits. It’d make for an interesting read!

I like #5, but I doubt that I would care for the price. Good stuff.

BoysGirlsMtns - January 4, 2012 - 10:24 AM

I just wrote a post on mine about this stuff and I find it a little hard to believe that anyone who actually travels a great deal actually uses these monstrosities. Check out a few of my strategies for packing…a little lighter.

Amazing.. Dopp Kit from Southern Marsh.. Looks good.. Has a good amount of space to!!! Good product.

The official Dopp Kit is Buxton. Buxton owns the Trademark DOPP.

RCS Likes: Old South BBQ

I have professed my love for BBQ ad nauseum.  I am aware of that, but like my hero Lewis Grizzard: “I can’t go a week without BBQ before I start sweating”. @tripreed (of A Trip Down South fame) and I met for lunch at Old South BBQ – a little hole-in-the-wall BBQ place in Smyrna, […]

I’ve been following your blog for a couple months now and this post is by far my favorite. As a Kansas City native, I have my own obsession with KC BBQ, but even more the Lewis Grizzard quote made my day. As a young kid I remember finding Grizzard’s book “Chili Dogs Always Bark at Night” at my Grandparents house and then making frequent trips thereafter to the library to read his entire collection. Keep up the great work!

Southern Proper X Red Clay Soul Benefit for Adopt-A-Golden Atlanta

Folks, The ladies of Southern Proper and Red Clay Soul have teamed up to spread a little Holiday Cheer to the great folks at Adopt A Golden Atlanta.  As you know, we are big dog people here, and this is right up our ally.  Southern Proper has graciously donated TEN of their Navy blue Frat […]

Great cause and a great offer!

Dean - December 19, 2011 - 9:30 AM

This is great. My best friend of 7 years is a Golden Retriever name Mile; and I’ve been a fan of Southern Proper for years. The only downside is I look absurd in a visor! I hope Southern Proper takes this opportunity to offer more Golden Retriever products.

Daniel - December 19, 2011 - 9:37 AM

I didn’t realize that there were many Goldens to be adopted. They seem to be one of the most in-demand breeds. This is great that someone is doing this though. I would love to get one of these!

Hil - December 19, 2011 - 8:53 PM

Ironically I had tweeted about Adopt a Golden earlier today. As a Golden owner, this is a great organization of getting these pups to their forever homes and just in time for Christmas.

Mr. Wonderful - December 21, 2011 - 10:24 AM

Mrs. Wonderful and I were adopted by a rescue Golden 13 years ago and have enjoyed every minute.

As an aside, I love Southern Proper’s goods but have always held of purchasing one of their “Frat Hats”. As a proud greek, I was brought in to believe that you do not call your fraternity at frat just as you would not call your country…

I’m certain that some will disagree, but I come from an old fraternity at an old school!

Sandie Rose's mom - December 22, 2011 - 9:25 AM

I am a Golden mom to Sandie Rose, an Adopt a Golden girl! Awesome Golden rescue that serves only to rescue and find the best forever family for almost 3,000 Goldens over the past 8 years. So happy to see Southern Proper and Red Clay Soul assist AGA with their service to Golden Retrievers. Holiday wishes to all involved!

Todd Rehm - December 22, 2011 - 11:22 AM

Great to see a local company supporting the best rescue operation around. My wife and I adopted our last golden retriever from Adopt A Golden Atlanta, and the organization is absolutely top notch.

What a good cause. Those visors look great as well.

Lace Up Boots

I’m getting on the lace up boot bandwagon.  Now to decide which one… Wolverine Shell Cordovan 1000 Mile Boot from Orvis Alden for J. Crew Suede Boots – I’m a sucker for anything snuff. Trickers Handmade Derby Boot Alden Muir Indy Boot in Loden Green from Unionmade Red Wing Beckman Boot in Chestnut Alden Indy Boot in […]

Benn - December 26, 2011 - 10:16 AM

The Wolverine, or the Alden Indy. These seem to the two that really kicked off the boot come-back, and still seem to be the two best.

Nate - December 26, 2011 - 10:21 AM

I am with Benn. I love the 1000 miles a ton, and you just can’t go wrong with a boot named after the most bad ass archaeologist of all time

Justin - December 26, 2011 - 12:03 PM

Alden Indy. Tough.

John Burton - December 26, 2011 - 12:40 PM

I am going in a diffent direction. The lace up boot is about performance. The Indy boot, a classic. But the Red Wing looks more like you actually need a boot, and authenticity is the cornerstone of style.

Evan - December 26, 2011 - 3:10 PM

Alden Indy if your going for rugged.
Alden Cordovan if your going for swag.

Terry - December 26, 2011 - 4:55 PM

The problem that I have with most of these is that they look like “Depression-era” work boots. I do like the Trickers boot, but I could never pull the trigger on any of the others. I am not criticizing your choices – its just MY problem.

Jedidiah Green - December 26, 2011 - 6:18 PM

Whilen none are a bad choice, to me, it comes down to how you are going to wear the boot: casual from jeans to khakis or dressier with slacks, etc. For casual, you just can’t beat an all-time classic in the Alden Indy boot. Dress calls for the the Tricklers. Either way, you can’t lose.
Regards,
Jedidiah Green

Jim - January 3, 2012 - 11:15 AM

Check out the ultimate indy from Leather Soul. The pair I have is Horween’s kudu leather – which is essentially heavily oiled and hand treated calfskin, done in the same procedure as shell cordovan. You may have to wait for the next production run, but the wait was worth it.

Merry Christmas from Red Clay Soul

Folks, I hope everyone has a great Christmas tomorrow.  Do me a favor – call an old friend today.  Someone you haven’t talked to in years.  Trust me. With that, here is my gift to you…one of the greatest Christmas skits ever: Ho Ho Ho, JRS

Does she have some Hungarian Vizsla in her? Looks a lot like my old pup.

The Wall Street Journal Review of ‘Bill of Rites’ – Congratulations, Cooper

How great is this?  The Wall Street Journal made an excellent decision in reviewing ‘Bill of Rites for the American Man’ by our good friend Cooper Ray of Social Primer.  Read the WSJ review here, but cliff notes are that BOR is ten articles that focus on everyday manners for every man – solid gold […]
