2010 RCS Holiday Gift Guide – Part Three

1. Titleist D910 D3 Driver: Their best driver since the 975D back in ’99. 2. Dixie Gentlemen Visor: A good ‘old-school’ style visor option. And it’s glen plaid. 3. Ralph Lauren Buffalo Plaid Fishing Bag: Handsome option for overnight trips – fishing or non-fishing related. 4. Patagonia Windproof Fleece Vest: For those early morning rounds. […]

Good G_d! No decent man should ever wear a visor. Those things are the worst. They same type of person who wears those things wears jorts. They are in the worst taste.

Dan Watson - December 13, 2010 - 7:01 PM

I have to respectfully disagree with the Anonymous post, in hot weather on the golf course, there is no replacement.

Anonymous - December 13, 2010 - 7:50 PM

Gotta agree with Dan…every gentleman's wardrobe should include a visor. Love the glen plaid.

Hilton - December 13, 2010 - 11:43 PM

I would also have to agree with the Anonymous post in that a visor is quite tacky. Why not wear a traditional gentleman's hat that would provide protection from the sun?

JRS - December 13, 2010 - 11:52 PM

Personally, I prefer golf/beach/lake with a visor. It is much more weather-friendly in the Summer.

Anon/Hilton – what would you suggest as a 'gentleman's hat'?

Anonymous - December 14, 2010 - 1:02 AM

No "gentleman" wears a visor. Not one ever has. They are for women tennis players.

A man who wears one looks like a clown/buffoon – especially if the hair pushes over the top.

Hilton - December 14, 2010 - 1:41 AM

Quite frankly, anything would be better than a visor, barring a baseball cap. I had a flat cap in mind, but realize it would be a bit uncomfortable in a warmer climate. Payne Stewart comes to mind:http://www.ozarksfairways.com/biography21.aspx

Anonymous - December 14, 2010 - 2:28 AM

Visors are a staple for southern gentleman on the golf course. But only the throwback collegiate visors of the 70's. They are larger and are no way confused with the Jort wearers visor.

Only Payne Stewart could pull off the "Payne Stewart hat". Others are calling too much attention to themselves.

Anonymous - December 14, 2010 - 2:38 AM

The Glen Plaid Visor is a great look for any season. Dixie Gentlemen is headed in the right direction with that style. No offense to anonymous in the first post but a visor is a classy look. Yes, there are visors out there that are trashy, but my friend just received the dixie glen plaid and it is nothing but quality and class. It can be dressed up or down.

If anyone else here agrees with me on this please feel free to comment

Anonymous - December 14, 2010 - 5:31 AM

I'm a Southerner that would not wear the Chav visor. Those that do call attention to themselves while washing my car and cutting my grass.

East of Oxford - December 14, 2010 - 6:41 AM

I'm all for golf visors but in my opinion the plaid is a little over the top.

After looking at some of the other offerings from "Dixie Gentleman", I'd probably stay away from the entire brand.

PS: I finally sent that package, i apologize for the delay. I hope they fit.

Anonymous - December 14, 2010 - 5:08 PM

Love the Blog JRS and the items you've selected for the Holiday Gift Guide, even the plaid visor! Ordered one yesterday, perfect Christmas gift.

Anonymous - December 14, 2010 - 6:40 PM

I just ordered A visor as well from Dixie Gentlemen. it is still a new line So far I have ordered a polo and some koozies from there and was very pleased. I have gotten alot of compliments on my polo and koozies. i met the guys who started it last spring and it was a brand new company so I am excited to see hwta else they put out there.

Anonymous - December 14, 2010 - 6:51 PM

East of Oxford,

Have you seen any of the other visors from dixie? I just ordered a white one that is pretty simple.

Anonymous - December 14, 2010 - 8:15 PM

I have a Tough Traveler camera bag that has been slung around by 3 generations since the 70's: http://www.toughtraveler.com/camera.asp

East of Oxford - December 15, 2010 - 2:17 PM

Anon- i was mainly alluding to the "The Original Southern Seersucker Game Day Overalls (Men's)."

Christmas Catalogs

It’s that time of year…the Christmas catalogs have been filling up our mailbox. There is a lot of good stuff out there – here are some highlights: Orvis Waxed Cotten Trapper Coat: Great looking coat. Orvis does a great job of adding that extra touch with the leather flaps and shoulders. LL Bean – New […]

L.A.S - December 11, 2010 - 4:21 PM

Why anyone would waste their money on MacAlister's is beyond me. Clarks desert boots are cheaper, better made and flat out look superior.

David - December 11, 2010 - 5:59 PM

That Orvis trapper is where it's at, if I ever gave up my Barbour, it would probably be for that jacket.

Also, definitely with LAS here, but I must admit I have been contemplating getting some colored laces for my Clarks.

CTN - December 11, 2010 - 11:54 PM

I think J Crew shoes are poor quality. I like the colored laces though. I have the Clark desert boots and agree with L.A.S

JRS - December 13, 2010 - 11:00 AM

I'll probably pull the trigger on Clarks very soon. I need to decide between another pair of Wallabees (snuff suede this time…) or a pair of Desert Boots (gray). Either way – I'm getting the colored laces from J. Crew.

briandbuell - December 27, 2010 - 12:46 AM

If you get an L.L. Bean Credit Card, monogramming is free.
You see this bag?! This bag belongs to BDB.

Martin - January 8, 2011 - 3:23 AM

I've had my J. Crew MacAlister boots for over a year now and put them to great use. I love them! They look even better after breaking them in. The fit, however, is the downside. If you are looking for comfort, I would NOT recommend J. Crew. But if it's the look you are after, J. Crew by far has a more sleek silhouette than Clarks.

Davis - December 6, 2010 - 2:48 PM

Nice selection, though I like to be a little more eclectic with my brands on the accessories. Luminox is over-rated in my opinion. I deployed with one and the thing failed withing 6 weeks of being on the ground in SW Asia

For my tastes, and in the same price rage, I suggest also looking at the Hamilton Khaki Field Auto. It's a very similar appearing watch, but (1) it's not a Luminox, (2) it's an automatic (no batteries!), (3) it's the classic design!

Heads Up: New Belt Designs from Tucker Blair

Tucker Blair does an outstanding job of capturing the nostalgia of a needlepoint belt. Their belt say ‘fun’. They have released 17 new belt designs just in time for Christmas. A few choice picks: Maddog Darts Mallard Give ‘em a try…there’s something for everyone.

Anonymous - December 5, 2010 - 3:35 PM

I was waiting for them to come out with a version with Labs on it – that Mad Dog is a disappointment; it looks so choppy and the dog's back is concave, etc… I don't know what it is but Smathers & Branson does much better detail work – of course, they are twice as much. But the Smathers Lab belt looks MUCH better than the Tucker Blair version.

Anonymous - December 5, 2010 - 7:07 PM

Tucker Blair's seem to be the best. I've become quite the collector of needlepoint belts (just kind of accumulated the ones I liked), and the few Smathers & Branson belts I own have started to fall apart. The needlepoint is becoming detached from the leather backing, and there's lots of fibers coming off the design itself. The best I have came from either Tucker Blair or from one I stumbled upon on Etsy one day!
